The tropical rainforest
in the State of Sarawak, Malaysia is amongst the world’s oldest
and least disturbed. As a showcase for bio-diversity, the ancient
rainforest is home to some of the most rare and interesting species
of wild plants and animals. In its countless species, the 80,000
sq km rainforest is an endless source for future chemical inventions
waiting to be discovered - drugs possibly for AIDS, Alzheimer's
and cancer.
To safeguard the natural heritage for future generations,
Sarawak Forest Department carries out sustainable management &
development of the forest resources and optimisation of its contributions
to the socio-economic development.
The enforcement of the Forests Ordinance 1958 (Cap.
126), the National Parks and Nature Reserve Ordinance 1998, the
Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998, and the control of all forestry
operations covered under the terms of a forest licence. The collection
of revenue due to the Government from timber royalty, premium and
other fees.
Environmental protection, protection and conservation
of endangered wildlife species and rare plants, establishment of
National Parks and Wildlife sanctuaries, and the control of the
harvest of the permanent forest estate based on the principle of
Sustainable Forest Management.
Advising the Government on all matters pertaining
to forestry and the promotion of a profitable export trade on forest
produce.
