Building Information Model (BIM) - is the process of generating and
managing building data during its life cycle. BIM involves representing
a design as objects – vague and undefined, generic or product-specific,
solid shapes or void-space oriented (like the shape of a room),
that carry their geometry, relations and attributes. BIM design
tools allow for extracting different views from a building model
for drawing production and other uses.

Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is a data model is intended to describe
building and construction industry data. The data model is non-proprietary
and open specification that
is not controlled by a single vendor or group of vendors. It
is an object-based file format with a data model developed by buildingSMART
(International Alliance for Interoperability, IAI)
to facilitate interoperability in the building industry, and
is a commonly used format for Building Information Modeling (BIM). The
IFC model specification is open and available.
[1] It is registered by ISO as ISO/PAS 16739 and is currently
in the process of becoming the official International Standard ISO 16739.
