18 Dec 2000 -- novaHEALTH officially renews its organisational
membership with Health Level Seven (HL7), one of several ANSI-accredited
Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) operating in the healthcare
arena.
Most SDOs produce standards (sometimes called specifications
or protocols) for a particular healthcare domain such as pharmacy,
medical devices, imaging or insurance (claims processing) transactions.
Health Level Seven's domain is clinical and administrative data.
HL7's mission is:
"To provide standards for the exchange, management
and integration of data that support clinical patient care and the
management, delivery and evaluation of healthcare services. Specifically,
to create flexible, cost effective approaches, standards, guidelines,
methodologies, and related services for interoperability between
healthcare information systems."
Headquartered in US, Health Level Seven is a non-profit
volunteer organisation. Today HL7 has developed into a comprehensive
standard and in brief, caters to Patient Administration (Admit,
Discharge, Transfer and Demographics), Order Entry (Clinical Services
and Observations, Pharmacy, Dietary, and Supplies), Financial Management
(Patient Accounting and Charges), Observation Reporting (Results
Reporting - Lab and other ancillary services) Scheduling, Medical
Records, etc. HL7 also support the exchange of digital medical
images
using DICOM.
novaHEALTH has been an organisational member of HL7
(via novaSPRINT) and has been developing interfaces based on this
standard since '98. With this membership, novaHEALTH is provided
with the latest updates of the HL7 standards and also kept abreast
of future developments.
